On Wednesday, Naomi Osaka shocked the crowd when she beat World No. 5 Venus Williams at the Hong Kong Open. The 19-year-old secured the win in two straight sets (7-5, 6-2) to advance into the quarterfinals.
The Japanese tennis star earned some redemption since she last faced Williams in the third round of Wimbledon. The American defeated Osaka 7-6 (3), 6-4 in what was quite a challenging match for the 37-year-old.
Osaka knew that she couldn’t breeze through this time either, she told reporters after the match in Hong Kong.
“I feel like even if I hit one semi-short ball she would come in and crush it, so I had to play really well,” she said.
This win will be her best of the year after she ousted World No. 6 Angelique Kerber at the US Open.
