No. 3 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany was upset by unseeded Ekaterina Makarova at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(11). Makarova, of Russia, also beat Kerber in the first round of the 2017 French Open.
“Today was unbelievable match and great fighting from both of us,” Makarova told reporters during the post match press conference. “Every time when we play, normally it’s like three sets, a lot of times three sets. So I knew that it would be very tough match. She’s a great player, a champion.”

In other news at the Cincinnati Open, No. 1 and defending champion Karolina Pliskova defeated Natalie Vikhlyantseva, Rogers Cup winner and No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina beat Lesia Tsurenko, Rogers Cup runner-up and No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki beat Elena Vesnina, and Sloane Stephens scored another upset over No.14 seed Petra Kvitova, all in straight sets. The winners move on to the Round of 16.
