Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams was upset by Australia’s Ashleigh Barty, while fellow American Madison Keys advanced Wednesday to the third round at the Cincinnati Open.
Ranked No. 9 in the world, Williams was knocked off in three sets by Barty. Barty took the opening set 6-3, but Williams rebounded to take the second set 6-2. But Barty regained control in the third set and closed it out 6-2 to advance to the third round at the Cincinnati Open.

However, No. 16 Madison Keys was able to advance to the Round of 16 with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 victory over Russia’s Daria Kastakina on Wednesday. Keys will have the honor of playing defending Wimbledon champion and No. 4 Garbine Muguruza of Spain on Thursday. With extra rest time, Muguruza advanced after her second round win on Tuesday.

No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, advanced to Thursday’s third round action as well with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva. She will face Spain’s Carla Suraez Navarro.
No. 2 Simona Halep, who advanced on Tuesday, found out on Wednesday that her third round opponent will be No. 15 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia. Sevastova advanced with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Roberta Vinci of Italy.
